On Spec

The Canadian magazine of the fantastic

On Spec is a quarterly of fantastic literature with a distinctly Canadian perspective—though submissions are also accepted from elsewhere. The magazine publishes speculative fiction and poetry, including science fiction, horror and fantasy. Although fairly competitive and not strictly a beginners' market, the On Spec staff seeks to foster emerging writers by frequently providing feedback on manuscripts.

Poetry Sought

More About On Spec

On Spec wants "strong voices that don't sound like anyone else. Original ideas would be great, too, though they're much harder to come by. Beautiful, startling images and language. Current and future science would be nice." Not interested in rhyme, antiquated language, religious themes or "poetry that only describes your emotional state". Pays $50CAD for poetry. Purchases first North American serial rights and publishes chosen poems around 6 to 18 months after initial acceptance.

Established 1989.
